Linear Time

New Years symbolizes more than just a linear measurement of time past
and making plans for future actions. It is a reflection of habits accumulated
over time, of automatic responses, addictions, and shared opinions. This is
a good description of linear time perspective.
We sit down and analyze what went right or wrong, what we can do to improve
the shortcomings, and how the future will be different if we change the circumstances
that failed us in the past. Have you noticed that most of the time , nothing changes significantly
in the next year? The gyms and martial arts studios fill up in January and February with
students trying to fulfill their New Years resolutions , only to quit shortly after starting.
The fantasy was there but not the conviction to make real changes. Linear time likes to
repeat itself. We like automatic habits that make life easier. Going towards ease and pleasure
and avoiding pain or discomfort. The present pleasure for future pain syndrome that is
rampant in human behavior.
The solution lies in the problem, as is often the case. Making goals and plans, seeking to
improve on past mistakes, and seeking expansion are very positive actions. The missing link is
feelings; Feeling gratitude for what we already have. Feeling safe and secure. Feeling love and connections. Feeling optimistic. Feeling balanced.
As teachers and coaches, we need to ask the hard questions and genuinely listen to the
feelings and thoughts that are holding people from their highest potential. As I said in the title of
my Black Belt thesis in 1980, "There is more to life than a good front kick!" Though, that's a good start.
Happy all years. Keep the Faith!
